Open Back Surgery

Open Back Surgery

Open back surgery is a serious medical procedure used to treat the most severe cases of spinal conditions such as a bulging disc, bone spur, or pinched nerve. It involves the use of general anesthesia and can take hours or more depending on the exact procedure and the nature of the condition being treated. Surgeons must make a long incision and often cut through muscle and bone so they can see and reach the affected area of the spine for treatment. Following the procedure, the patient must stay in the hospital for a day or more, and a full recovery can often take months.

Alternatives to Open Back Surgery

For some people, the only alternative to open back surgery seems to be suffering, and many do. However, this doesn't have to be the case, and there is a safe and effective alternative procedure that treats many spinal conditions without many of the risks of open back surgery. It is known as endoscopic spine treatment, and it utilizes the principles of arthroscopy to treat spinal conditions with a faster recovery time and higher success rate. Due to its minimized trauma to the body, it is even available to some people who don't qualify for open back surgery due to health complications or previous surgeries.

Only you can decide if open back surgery or endoscopic spine surgery is right for you, but Laser Spine Institute offers a complimentary MRI or CT scan review to determine if you qualify for the procedure. Contact us to learn more and to speak with one of our spine doctors about all your potential treatment options.
